WPS will not start / “program unexpectedly interrupted”
Kingsoft’s own help article treats this as a damaged runtime, a security tool intercepting files, or a bad component. Their recommended order:
- Full system scan with the security product you already trust.
- Reinstall from wps.com (overlay or uninstall-then-install).
- Use Diagnose and Repair from the error dialog or from Global Settings on the WPS homepage.
- Emergency: edit in the web/cloud docs product so you are not dead in the water.

It stole my PDFs, Word files, or Excel files
In the client: Settings (upper right) → Component Management → File Format connection → clear “Compatible with third-party software” if you do not want WPS as default. Then reboot if Windows still routes files wrongly.
In Windows 10/11: Settings → Apps → Default apps → set .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx individually. Right-click a file → Open with → always use.

Ads, full-screen upsells, prompts on every save
This is the loudest 2026 mobile-review theme: ads that used to be occasional now appear on save, and some cannot be dismissed. Desktop free users see upgrade banners too. There is no secret “free Pro” switch. Options that are real:
- Pay for Pro (review snapshots ~$36/year) to drop most nags and unlock PDF extras.
- Use WPS only as an editor, not as a default app, so you see it less.
- Keep an older workflow: LibreOffice or Google Docs for drafts, WPS only when a DOCX must round-trip.
Uninstall that actually uninstalls
- Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps → WPS Office → Uninstall. Or Control Panel → Programs.
- If it is missing from the list, reinstall the official package so the uninstaller registers, then remove it.
- After removal, reset file types back to Word/Excel/Edge.
- Leftover folders under AppData\Roaming and Local are common; delete WPS/Kingsoft folders only after uninstall, and only if you do not need cloud caches.
Store/UWP builds uninstall from the same Apps list but will not leave the same Win32 leftovers.
Updates fail or the app “got worse after a patch”
Play Store reviews in 2026 describe broken third-party cloud and heavier ads after updates. Desktop users should let the official updater run, or download a fresh installer over the top. Avoid “update.exe” from forums. If a new build breaks you, the Store’s uninstall/reinstall is cleaner than hunting versions on random sites.
Linux-specific
Missing fonts (especially Calibri substitutes), extra title bars on some DEs, and PDF default fights. Use the distro package when you can, install the official font set, and read the Linux install guide.
Slow, high RAM, or fans up
WPS is light compared with Microsoft 365, but a tabbed window with five large PDFs is still a tabbed window with five large PDFs. Close unused documents, disable hardware acceleration in settings if the GPU driver is old, and keep the suite off network drives for huge XLSX files.
When to talk to Kingsoft, not us
Billing, refunds, and account lockouts go to WPS support / in-app customer service. Public reviews (Trustpilot, among others) frequently complain that refunds are hard. Screenshot your receipt before you chat. We cannot cancel a subscription for you.

Cannot save / “access denied” / file is read-only
- Check the file is not still open in Word, preview pane, or OneDrive “online-only” stub. Desktop search preview locks files more often than people think.
- Save As to Desktop. If that works, the original folder is permission-blocked (OneDrive pause, NAS, controlled folder access in Windows Security).
- Controlled folder access: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Ransomware protection → allow WPS through, or save outside Documents until IT approves.
- If the PDF came from email as “protected,” you may be allowed to view but not save edits — that is DRM, not a WPS bug.
Wrong fonts, shifting page breaks
The file asked for Calibri/Cambria and your Linux or stripped Windows install does not have them. Install metric-compatible fonts (Carlito/Caladea) or the actual fonts if licensed. Then close/reopen. Never “fix” a legal document by shrinking font 0.5 pt to force a page count — that is how you hide a deleted clause on page 17.
Spellcheck in the wrong language
A document marked English (US) will not catch UK spellings the way you want, and a Russian UI pack is not the same as a Russian proofing dictionary. Set proofing language on the selection (Review tools), not just the app UI language. Mixed Arabic/English documents: set direction per paragraph; do not rely on the default for the whole file.
Prints blank or tiny
Try Export PDF and print the PDF from Edge. If the PDF looks right, the printer driver is the problem. If the PDF is also blank, the page might be white text on white, or the content is in a hidden layer — show formatting, check white font. Labels: set paper size to the actual label stock, not A4 with a tiny drawing in the corner.
Fans up, 30% CPU idle
Disable hardware acceleration in settings if the GPU driver is old. Close unused tabs in the WPS window (five large PDFs is five large PDFs). Exclude the install folder from an over-aggressive third-party antivirus after a clean scan — or you get the start-failure loop Kingsoft documents. Update GPU drivers from the vendor, not from a “driver booster” ad.
Two WPS icons, files open the wrong one
You installed Store UWP and the website EXE. Uninstall one family. Then repair associations. Which package you wanted.
Recovered nothing after a crash
AutoRecover only helps if the path existed and the timer had elapsed. Search the user AppData tree for bak / autosave names after a crash, but treat it as luck. Going forward: F12 dated copies, File History, and do not keep the only copy on a USB stick.
“Not signed in” but the file is on the PC
Local files should still open. If WPS blocks edit until you log in, you are in a cloud-only document. Download a copy (File → Save As to disk) before a trial quota bites. If the copy is empty, the cloud object never downloaded — check the real Drive/Dropbox web UI, not WPS recents. Theme: cloud caveats.
Missing language / ugly UI mix
UI language and proofing language are different. You can have English menus and French spellcheck, or the reverse. Download the language pack from Settings. Mixed RTL/LTR: set paragraph direction per run. A document that “looks broken” is often a left-to-right paragraph with Arabic words and a wrong keyboard — not a corrupt file.
Activation / Pro watermark / trial expired
Sign out and in. Check you are on the same Kingsoft account that paid. Store purchases (Apple/Google/Microsoft) do not always magically attach to a website login — support has to link them, and reviewers say that chat is hard. Screenshot the receipt. We do not provide keys.
Slow save on a network drive
Copy to local SSD, work, copy back. Wi-Fi NAS plus a 30 MB XLSX plus antivirus scanning every write is a minute per save. WPS looks “slow”; the path is slow.
File says it is corrupt
Try Open and Repair if offered. Try Word/Excel as a second opener. Try a copy from email/cloud version history. If it is a USB that was yanked, the file may be truncated — recovery tools help sometimes, forum “repair.exe” tools help attackers. Recovery order.
Blurry UI / huge UI / tiny UI
Windows display scaling at 150% plus an old GPU: disable hardware acceleration, set WPS compatibility DPI, or use 125%. Linux: see desktop environment notes on the Linux page.
IME / Arabic / CJK input
Use the OS input method. If characters appear as boxes, the font does not cover the script — switch the body style to a font that does (Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans CJK, etc.). Do not send a file that only looks right on your PC.
Copy-paste from web dumps formatting
Paste special → unformatted text, then apply Normal. Browser paste brings in 40 spans of 9 pt gray. That is how a 3-page letter becomes 8 pages of junk styles.
Still stuck
Write down: Windows/macOS/Linux version, WPS version from About, Store vs EXE, file type, exact error text, whether it happens in a new blank file. Then Kingsoft help or in-app support. A screenshot of the About box is worth more than “it doesn’t work.” Official: help.wps.com.
Save denied / file in use
Close the preview pane in Explorer. Close the same file in Word. If it lives on OneDrive, wait for the cloud icon to stop spinning. Copy to Desktop, save there, copy back. Antivirus scanning every write on a network share feels like WPS froze; it did not. Controlled folder access: allow WPS or save outside the guarded folder.
Document looks “not like Word”
Missing fonts. Install the font or a metric substitute. Do not “match the screenshot” by shrinking margins until the page count agrees — that hides the problem until the printer. On Linux this is the main sport: fonts.
Crashes on one file, not on a blank file
The file is the bug. Copy contents into a new document in chunks (not the last 2 pages if those contain the broken OLE object). Or open in Word and save down. Or export PDF and live with a dead layout. Repair tools from video ads stay off the machine.
Updater loops
Store: cancel, reboot, update Store first, then WPS. EXE: download a fresh installer from wps.com and overlay. If a proxy MITM-inspects HTTPS, updates fail with certificate errors — that is the network team, not a “fix” we publish involving disabled verification.
