WPS Office for Linux

A community favorite with .deb and .rpm builds. Kingsoft’s Linux story has been on-again/off-again since 2017 tweets; the packages are still on the official site.

Start at WPS Linux or the download center. Help Center lists Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, deepin, Fedora; x86; 2 GB RAM; 2 GB disk.

Full steps, fonts, and mime types: Linux install guide.

What to expect

  • UI very close to Windows — that is the appeal versus LibreOffice.
  • Proprietary license, not open source (Kingsoft floated then deleted open-source tweets years ago).
  • Font substitutions for Calibri/Cambria will change line breaks in DOCX. Install a metric-compatible font set if layout must match Windows.

Why Linux users still install a proprietary suite

LibreOffice is the ethical default. WPS is the “my colleague sent a DOCX and the ribbon is what I know” default. Both can live on one machine. Use LibreOffice when you can; WPS when the file is a Microsoft-shaped political object.

Install

Official .deb / .rpm from wps.com Linux. Then apt-get install -f if dpkg complains about deps. Flatpak/Snap community packages exist; official Kingsoft bits are still the ones we point to. Commands and fonts.

Fonts are the real Linux problem

Windows DOCX assumes Calibri/Cambria/Arial. Without metric-compatible fonts, line breaks move, “this thesis is 80 pages” becomes 87, and tables clip. Install Carlito/Caladea or licensed Microsoft fonts where legal. CJK documents need CJK fonts or you get tofu boxes.

MIME

WPS likes to own PDF. Reset with your desktop’s default apps or xdg-mime. Community Office.conf flag to skip association detection at startup is in the Linux guide. After an update, check again.

Desktop environments

Extra title bars, scaling at 125%, Wayland vs X11: if the window is unusable, try X11 session or disable GPU acceleration in WPS settings. This is the community-support bargain Kingsoft’s 2017 tweets already hinted at.

Snap/Flatpak vs official deb

Unofficial packages lag, pick up mime in creative ways, and are not what Kingsoft tested. If you file a bug, say which package. This site points at the official Linux download page. Community wikis are extra, not a second official.

Input methods

fcitx/ibus plus WPS has a long forum trail. If you cannot type CJK or Arabic, test in gedit first. If gedit works and WPS does not, it is the suite’s input integration, not “Linux is broken.” Try another IM or an X11 session.
