Uninstall WPS Office completely and get your PDFs back

Removing the icon is not the same as removing the file associations. Do both, or the next double-click will resurrect a helper you thought was gone.

Windows

  1. Close WPS. Check the tray. End leftover processes in Task Manager if they linger (do not kill random svchost).
  2. Settings → Apps → WPS Office → Uninstall. Store builds leave via the same list.
  3. Reboot.
  4. Settings → Apps → Default apps: .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx back to Edge/Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
  5. Optional: delete leftover Kingsoft/WPS folders in AppData\Roaming and Local if you do not need cloud caches. If you might reinstall tomorrow, skip this.

Mac

Drag the app to Trash, then empty. Reset defaults with Get Info → Change All. iCloud files stay; they were never inside the .app.

Linux

sudo apt remove wps-office or sudo dnf remove wps-office, then fix mime defaults. Fonts you installed yourself stay — that is good.

Android / iOS

Uninstall like any app. Cloud files on Kingsoft’s servers do not vanish because you deleted the APK — log into the web account if you need to wipe those. Local phone storage: Files app.

If uninstall is missing from the list, reinstall from wps.com so the uninstaller registers, then remove. Help: help.wps.com.

What leftover folders are

Caches, crash dumps, cloud tokens, recently used lists. Deleting them after uninstall is cleanliness, not a privacy guarantee (the cloud copy may still exist on Kingsoft’s servers). If you used WPS Cloud, revoke sessions on the web account. If you only worked locally, Recycle Bin and AppData are the whole story.

Reinstall the same day

You uninstalled because PDFs were stolen, then you still need Writer. Reinstall, and this time decline associations. Official channel only. Then verify defaults with two probe files on the Desktop.
